The World\u2019s First Mechanically Drilled Oil Well<\/b><\/span><br \/><br \/>The beginning of the modern oil industry is often associated with Edwin Drake, who successfully drilled an oil well in Pennsylvania, USA, in 1859.<br \/><br \/>However, an important milestone in oil production took place in Baku 13 years earlier.<br \/><br \/>In 1846, a mechanically drilled oil well was completed in Bibi-Heybat, near Baku. It is widely recognised as one of the world\u2019s earliest successful oil wells drilled using mechanical equipment.<br \/><br \/>This achievement marked an important step towards modern industrial oil production and helped establish Azerbaijan as a pioneering centre of the global petroleum industry.<br \/><br \/><span class=\"s1\"><b>2. The World\u2019s First Modern Oil Tanker \u2013 Zoroaster<\/b><\/span><br \/><br \/>Before the development of specialised oil tankers, petroleum was transported mainly in wooden barrels, making shipping expensive and inefficient.<br \/><br \/>In 1878, the Nobel Brothers Petroleum Company introduced the Zoroaster, widely recognised as the world\u2019s first modern oil tanker.<br \/><br \/>Built with specialised tanks for transporting petroleum in bulk, the vessel represented a major innovation in maritime transportation.<br \/><br \/>The Zoroaster operated on the Caspian Sea, transporting oil from Baku to other ports, including Astrakhan.<br \/><br \/>This revolutionary approach helped transform the global oil transportation industry and paved the way for modern tanker fleets.<br \/><br \/><span class=\"s1\"><b>3. A Pioneering School for Muslim Girls<\/b><\/span><br \/><br \/>At the beginning of the 20th century, educational opportunities for Muslim girls were extremely limited in many parts of the region.<br \/><br \/>Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, one of Baku\u2019s wealthiest oil entrepreneurs and most respected philanthropists, believed that education should be accessible to girls as well as boys.<br \/><br \/>Despite opposition from conservative circles, Taghiyev financed the construction of a school for Muslim girls in Baku.<br \/><br \/>Opened in 1901, the school became one of the earliest secular educational institutions for Muslim girls in the region.<br \/><br \/>Named after Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, the school represented an important milestone in the development of women\u2019s education in Azerbaijan.<br \/><br \/>Taghiyev\u2019s initiative helped challenge traditional attitudes and created new educational opportunities for future generations.<br \/><br \/><span class=\"s1\"><b>4. The First Opera in the Muslim East<\/b><\/span><br \/><br \/>In 1908, Baku witnessed a landmark event in the history of music.<br \/><br \/>The premiere of <span class=\"s1\"><i>Leyli and Majnun<\/i><\/span>, composed by Uzeyir Hajibeyli, introduced a new form of musical theatre that combined European opera traditions with Azerbaijani mugham.<br \/><br \/>Unlike conventional European operas, <span class=\"s1\"><i>Leyli and Majnun<\/i><\/span> incorporated traditional mugham performance into its musical structure.<br \/><br \/>The work is widely recognised as the first opera in the Muslim East.<br \/><br \/>Remarkably, Hajibeyli was only 22 years old when he composed this groundbreaking work.<br \/><br \/>His achievement marked the beginning of professional Azerbaijani opera and had a lasting influence on the development of music in the region.<br \/><br \/><span class=\"s1\"><b>5. The First Parliamentary Republic in the Muslim East<\/b><\/span><br \/><br \/>On 28 May 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic declared its independence.<br \/><br \/>It became the first parliamentary democratic republic established in the Muslim East.<br \/><br \/>The new republic introduced progressive political reforms and established a parliament representing different ethnic and religious communities.<br \/><br \/>One of its most significant achievements was granting women equal political rights, including the right to vote.<br \/><br \/>This made Azerbaijan one of the earliest countries in the region to introduce women\u2019s suffrage, ahead of many European nations.<br \/><br \/>Although the republic existed for less than two years, its political and democratic legacy remains an important part of Azerbaijan\u2019s history.<br \/><br \/><span class=\"s1\"><b>6. The First Electrified Suburban Railway in the Soviet Union<\/b><\/span><br \/><br \/>In 1926, Baku became the starting point of another important technological milestone.<br \/><br \/>The first electrified suburban passenger railway in the Soviet Union began operating between Baku and Sabunchi.<br \/><br \/>The railway was developed to improve transportation for workers travelling between the city and the rapidly expanding oil-producing districts.<br \/><br \/>Before electrification, suburban passengers relied on steam-powered trains.<br \/><br \/>The introduction of electric trains provided faster and more efficient transportation, significantly improving connections between Baku and its industrial suburbs.<br \/><br \/>This achievement marked an important stage in the development of Soviet railway transportation.<br \/><br \/><span class=\"s1\"><b>7. The First Metro System in the Muslim World<\/b><\/span><br \/><br \/>On 6 November 1967, the Baku Metro officially opened, becoming the first underground rapid transit system in the Muslim world.<br \/><br \/>The metro initially connected several important areas of the city, providing residents with a fast and affordable means of transportation.<br \/><br \/>At the time, a journey cost just five Soviet kopecks.<br \/><br \/>Baku\u2019s underground railway opened before metro systems in several other major cities, including Tashkent, Cairo and Almaty.<br \/><br \/>Over the decades, the network has expanded with additional lines and stations.<br \/><br \/>Today, the Baku Metro remains an essential part of the city\u2019s public transportation system and an important symbol of its modern development.<br \/><br \/><span class=\"s1\"><b>8. The World\u2019s First Specialised Carpet Museum<\/b><\/span><br \/><br \/>Carpet weaving has been an essential part of Azerbaijani culture for centuries.<br \/><br \/>Traditional Azerbaijani carpets are admired for their intricate patterns, distinctive colours and regional weaving techniques.<br \/><br \/>In 1967, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum was established in Baku as the world\u2019s first museum dedicated specifically to the collection, preservation and study of carpets.<br \/><br \/>The museum was created to protect Azerbaijan\u2019s rich carpet-weaving heritage and introduce this traditional art form to a wider audience.<br \/><br \/>Today, the museum houses an extensive collection of carpets, textiles, embroidery and other examples of decorative and applied arts.<br \/><br \/>Since 2014, it has occupied a distinctive building on Baku Boulevard, designed to resemble a rolled carpet.<br \/><br \/>The museum is one of Baku\u2019s most recognisable cultural attractions.<br \/><br \/><span class=\"s1\"><b>9. One of the Soviet Union\u2019s First Major Household Air Conditioner Factories<\/b><\/span><br \/><br \/>During the Soviet period, air conditioning was far less common in private homes than it is today.<br \/><br \/>In the 1970s, Baku became an important centre for the production of household air conditioners.<br \/><br \/>The Baku Air Conditioner Factory began manufacturing window-mounted air conditioning units in 1975.<br \/><br \/>Known as BK, short for <span class=\"s1\"><i>Bytovoy Konditsioner<\/i><\/span> (household air conditioner), these appliances became widely recognised throughout the Soviet Union.<br \/><br \/>The factory produced durable units that were supplied to different Soviet republics and exported to international markets.<br \/><br \/>Baku-made air conditioners became particularly well known for their robust construction and long service life.<br \/><br \/>The factory remains a notable example of Azerbaijan\u2019s industrial development during the Soviet era.<br \/><br \/><span class=\"s1\"><b>10.
