The history of this famous banking dynasty dates back to the 18th century. Its founder, Mayer Amschel Rothschild, was born in Frankfurt, Germany, into a family involved in trade and financial services.
The family name Rothschild comes from the German words meaning “red shield,” referring to a sign associated with the family’s ancestral home in Frankfurt.
Mayer Amschel established a successful banking business and later involved his five sons in expanding the family’s financial activities across Europe.
Over time, five major branches of the Rothschild banking dynasty emerged in Frankfurt, Vienna, London, Naples and Paris.
During the 19th century, the Rothschild family became one of Europe’s most influential financial dynasties, financing governments, railway construction and major industrial projects.
How Did the Rothschild Family Come to Baku?
By the late 19th century, the French branch of the Rothschild family was led by Baron Alphonse de Rothschild, a grandson of the dynasty’s founder.
His involvement in Azerbaijan would become an important chapter in the history of Baku’s oil industry.
Interestingly, just like the Nobel brothers, the Rothschild family entered Baku’s oil business through an unexpected opportunity.
During the oil boom of the late 19th century, the rapidly expanding petroleum industry required better transportation connections to international markets.
One of the most important infrastructure projects was the Baku–Batumi railway, designed to transport oil and other goods from the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea coast.
The railway project faced financial difficulties, and the industrialists involved sought additional investment.
One of them, S. Palashkovsky, approached the French branch of the Rothschild family for financial support.
The Rothschilds already had considerable experience financing railway projects across Europe, making the investment particularly attractive.
The Rothschilds and Azerbaijan’s Oil Industry
In 1883, the Rothschild family became involved in Baku’s oil industry through the establishment of the Caspian and Black Sea Oil Industry and Trade Society.
The company, commonly known by its Russian abbreviation BNITO, became an important participant in the production, transportation and international trade of Azerbaijani oil.
The Rothschilds helped expand the infrastructure needed to transport petroleum products from Baku to European markets.
Their investments strengthened Baku’s connections with international trade networks and contributed to the rapid development of the city’s oil industry.
During this period, Baku attracted some of the world’s most influential industrialists and financiers, including the Nobel and Rothschild families.
Their competition and investments helped transform the city into one of the world’s leading oil-producing centres.
