Continue Browsing TripsFor centuries, Azerbaijan has been known for its natural resources traditionally used for therapeutic and preventive purposes, including mineral waters, medicinal muds, volcanic mud and the country’s unique Naftalan oil. This distinctive oil was traded along the Great Silk Road and valued for its traditional medicinal uses.
Scientific research into Azerbaijan’s natural therapeutic resources began in the 19th century, helping establish the country’s reputation as a destination for health and wellness tourism. Today, Azerbaijan offers a variety of health resorts and sanatoriums that combine traditional treatments with modern wellness facilities.
Thanks to the well-developed infrastructure and modern medical equipment at Azerbaijan’s health resorts and sanatoriums, visitors can enjoy therapeutic treatments and wellness programmes almost all year round.
Naftalan is one of Azerbaijan’s best-known health resorts, famous for its unique Naftalan oil, which has been used in traditional therapeutic practices for centuries.
This distinctive type of oil is found in the Naftalan region and has long been associated with treatments for musculoskeletal conditions, including joint and muscle problems. Naftalan oil therapies have also traditionally been used for certain skin, neurological, urological and gynaecological conditions.
Naftalan oil is valued for its traditionally recognized soothing properties. However, the effectiveness and safety of specific treatments depend on the medical condition, and scientific evidence supporting many of these uses remains limited.
Location of Naftalan Health Resort
Naftalan is located approximately 45 kilometres from Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second-largest city.
The resort is situated in a peaceful area, away from the busy atmosphere of major cities, making it a popular destination for visitors seeking relaxation and wellness treatments.
History of Naftalan
The history of Naftalan as a health resort dates back to the 19th century.
In 1873, Naftalan oil was extracted manually from shallow wells. Known historically as the “thick blood of the earth,” the oil attracted attention because of its unusual properties and traditional medicinal applications.
Over time, researchers began studying Naftalan oil and its potential therapeutic uses.
In 1926, one of the first specialized sanatoriums was established near the Naftalan oil deposits.
During the Soviet period, Naftalan became a well-known health destination, attracting visitors from across the Soviet Union.
The resort was particularly associated with treatments for joint and musculoskeletal conditions, although its facilities also offered programmes for other health concerns.
Modern Health Resorts and Sanatoriums in Naftalan
Today, Naftalan is an established centre for health and wellness tourism in Azerbaijan.
The city offers a range of modern hotels, specialized sanatoriums and wellness facilities, combining traditional Naftalan oil treatments with contemporary accommodation and medical services.
Depending on the resort, available facilities may include medical consultation rooms, diagnostic equipment, laboratories, physiotherapy services and wellness centres.
Treatment programmes can include Naftalan oil baths, physiotherapy, massage and other procedures recommended by medical professionals.
Some facilities use specially processed Naftalan oil or oil-based preparations.
Individual Treatment Programmes
Many Naftalan sanatoriums offer personalized treatment programmes based on each guest’s medical history, health condition and individual needs.
Before starting a treatment programme, visitors may undergo a medical consultation and relevant examinations.
The type, duration and frequency of procedures are determined by the resort’s medical specialists.
It is important to consult a qualified healthcare professional before undergoing Naftalan oil treatments, particularly if you have an existing medical condition.
When Can You Visit Naftalan?
Naftalan health resorts operate throughout the year, allowing visitors to plan their stay in any season.
Many resorts offer accommodation, meals, medical consultations and wellness procedures as part of their packages.

The Galaalti Health Resort in Azerbaijan is known for its unique Naftsu mineral water, traditionally used for therapeutic purposes. The earliest written references to its medicinal properties date back to 1578.
The name Naftsu means “oil water” and refers to the water’s natural content of organic compounds associated with petroleum deposits. Although the name is sometimes linked to the famous Truskavets resort in Ukraine, Azerbaijan has its own natural sources of this distinctive mineral water.
In 1969, a new mineral water spring was discovered in the forests near Galaalti village, approximately 20 kilometres from Shabran (formerly Davachi). Seven springs were identified in the area, with a combined water flow exceeding 10,000 litres per minute.
The mineral water from Galaalti contains naturally occurring organic compounds and minerals that contribute to its distinctive composition.
Unlike bottled mineral water, Naftsu is traditionally consumed directly at the source because its chemical composition may change during storage and transportation.
The water is relatively low in mineral content and contains various organic substances, including compounds associated with natural hydrocarbon deposits.
Galaalti mineral water has been studied for its chemical composition and potential therapeutic applications. However, visitors should consult a qualified healthcare professional before using mineral water as part of a treatment programme.
