Azerbaijan’s climate is influenced by several factors, including its geographical location, air masses, diverse terrain and proximity to the Caspian Sea.
The country’s climate varies considerably from region to region, ranging from dry and semi-arid conditions in central and eastern Azerbaijan to humid subtropical conditions in the southeast (Lankaran Lowland), temperate conditions along parts of the Caspian coast and cold mountain climates at higher elevations.
Azerbaijan receives approximately 1,800–2,900 hours of sunshine annually, depending on the region. This abundance of sunshine has earned it the nickname “Land of Sunshine.”
Baku has a mild, semi-arid climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and relatively cool winters with little precipitation. The Absheron Peninsula, where Baku is located, is known for its strong winds.
The two best-known local winds are:
Khazri – A strong, cold northerly wind that can reach speeds of 35–40 m/s during severe weather conditions. It brings welcome relief during hot summer days.
Gilavar – A warmer southerly wind that can blow from the southeast or southwest. During winter, it often brings milder temperatures.
